Hi, I’m Pru.

I’m an established editor and audience specialist, expert recipe wrangler, restaurant reviewer and a lifelong fan of good food (I also happen to be a Mum which means I can multi-task like a boss). I’ve spent over 20 years immersed in the world of food publishing, in both print and digital, lending my skills to some of Australia’s most-loved magazines, cookbooks and websites, and working alongside the country’s top chefs, food personalities and publishers.

If you’re looking for someone who knows what makes great content sing – and what should be cut without mercy – you’re in the right place. I’m a stickler for detail, a champion of clarity and authenticity, and an editor who knows how to keep a project (and a team) on track. Years as a managing editor taught me how to juggle deadlines, personalities, and picky punctuation with a smile. I also can’t stand a cliché, a missing ingredient or a dangling modifier.

I specialise in food and lifestyle content that’s not only beautifully written and accurate but truly connects with its audience. Whether you need help refining your recipes, polishing your prose, or simply getting your big idea out into the world, I’m here to help.

I believe in what I do. I care (a lot). And I know how to turn good copy into great content, and produce a cookbook, magazine, email newsletter, social post or blog that people will truly engage with. If we get to work together, expect passion, precision, and maybe the (not-so) occasional chat about where we should be grabbing a bite to eat, the best additive-free supermarket products right now and where to buy your coffee beans, or what’s for dinner tonight.

A few favourite projects

“I have had the pleasure of working with Pru Engel in the role of production and sub-editor across several years and two separate projects. She is an eagle-eyed sub-editor, and a firm production editor with an enviable lightness of touch, and a wonderful understanding of the world of food and drink. Highly recommend, 10 out 10, no notes“

“We recently engaged Pru to copyedit a cookery book written by an author with English as a second language. Her edit demonstrated rapport with the author, common sense with the recipes, and correspondence with our style guide. She communicated well and returned the job on time. A delight to work with”

Nicci Dodanwela
Senior Editor, Hardie Grant

“I had the absolute pleasure of working with Pru Engel as the editor on my Hardie Grant cookbook, Philoxenia – A Seat at My Table over a number of
months. I found Pru to be dedicated, hard working, flexible and supportive throughout the entire process. She has a strong attention to detail,
took great care in all her work, and worked in a collaborative and empowering manner with me as the author while still meeting the deadlines required
by the publisher. Pru cared about the values and vision for the book and ensured her editing maintained its integrity. I highly recommend her.”
